My Street Style: White denim + Flannel Shirt

Whoever said ‘you can’t wear white after Labor Day’ was just plain wrong. Especially in places where the fall still enjoys summer-like weather (California, I’m talking to YOU), you can easily incorporate white into your autumn look. The key to making white work this time of year is in the accessories. I made my white on white appropriate for fall by adding a side of flannel, and finishing off the look with my favorite pair of combat boots.

My Street Style: Vintage Dress + Dark Lips

vintage 60's dress, brocade dress, mini dress, what to do with vintage dress, how to customize vintage This week my street style took a decidedly dressy turn, when I donned this vintage brocade dress for Locale Magazine’s Fall Formal in Laguna Beach. I know I’ve already mentioned my love of vintage before (link), but it certainly deserves another shout out – shopping vintage is a sustainable practice that just so happens to be environmentally friendly, and vintage pieces are almost always better quality, and less expensive, than their modern counterparts. I didn’t actually ‘buy’ this particular dress – I inherited it from my great aunt; she wore it in the 60’s and never had the heart to throw it away. And I’m so glad that she didn’t! It’s now one of the most treasured pieces in my wardrobe. When it comes to vintage, don’t be afraid to get a little creative. I had this dress shortened and tailored to fit me better; in fact, it was floor-length when I got it. It’s so worth spending a little money to have a one-of-a-kind piece that fits perfectly and is styled exactly as you like it! The tailor’s fee is a lot less than you would pay for something brand new of the same caliber.

My Street Style: Flares + Cut-In Tank

Fall 2014 Outfit, Flatforms, Nyx Transylvania, Dark Lipstick, Goth Fashion, Fall 2014 FashionThere’s something about this time of year, probably just its proximity to Halloween, that gets me feeling all witchy inside. For example: exactly this time last year I got the urge to dye my hair purple (http://justjilli.com/2013/10/23/hollyweird/) and buy Demonia boots (http://justjilli.com/2014/08/26/all-about-the-a-line/) – I know, not the most practical purchase, but they still make me smile when I see them in my closet, so that’s gotta count for something, right? Well, this year my inner Goth child told me to get a (temporary) septum ring and dark purple lipstick. And my look took a decidedly darker direction when I combined these two things (septum + dark lips) and wore them with my new favorite flares and a cut-in graphic tank. (BTW, I am really feeling flared leggings and cut-in tanks right now, it’s all I seem to feel like wearing of late). I wore this outfit to the Chvrches concert at Hollywood Palladium last Friday night, which was our last big hurrah in Hollywood before the big move. (In case you missed it, I’m moving to San Diego TODAY!)

Fun fact: I actually helped design the top, and it’s one of my very favorite pieces of clothing right now! You can’t really see the hieroglyphic-type symbols down the front, but don’t fret, because I’m sure I’ll feature it in an actual outfit post soon enough.
